After a bout with a totally un-funny dental nerve infection, I'm back on my feet with some of the hard stuff  (There will be spoilers ahead.) There is not a great tradition of horror movies in Hong Kong and Chinese cinema.  Like almost any genre in chinese and Hk film the sources of the 'horror' genre are grounded in chinese opera, historic novels and story compilations, the zhiguai xiaoshuo  ( 志怪小说) Tales of the Miraculous  going back to the Song and even Han Dynasties, with Pu Songling's liaozhai zhiyi  (聊齋誌異 Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio  1740) being one of the chief inspirations for the film makers in the s...

Hi, People! Welcome to my blog! This should have perhaps been my first post, but this blog was a spontaneous idea and I jumped right into it with this first review... I'm a film fan. I'm from Germany. I've been an aficionado of asian movies and a lover of all things east asian for 30 years. I've studied English and Japanese and Film/Theatre.  I've worked as a News Cameraman and did camerawork in the medical field, a profession I can't still work in due to medical problems. I'm not a film critic, I'm far from objective and the films I chose to review here are films I like or find remarkable in one way or the other. There will be Hong Kong, Mainland Chinese and Japanese subjects here with occasional digressions into Korea. I can't guarantee regular content but I guarantee films that are fun and great. Let's see where this takes us... Feel free to comment and make suggestions over movies and subjects. Be excellent to each other!  ...

Running on Karma (2003)  大隻佬 Daai Zek Lou Johnny To Kei-fung (Dir.), Cheng Siu-keung (Cinematography) Wai Ka-fai (Script, Prod.) Andy Lau, Cecilia Cheung I have looked forward to watching this film for quite some time. I read the reviews on Amazon.de, there were some pretty bad ones and they made me very curious because they were either enthusiastic or totally devastating. Then last week I bought it, finally, and had to wait several days before I was able to sit down and have what turned out a VERY entertaining evening with this wonderful piece of Hong Kong cinematic art! The film depends on three things. Its two main actors and the skill of its director, Johnny To. A Jack-of-all-trades in Hong Kong Cinema, Johnny To Kei-fung has been directing movies since 1980 and has contributed to almost any genre imaginable, with great success. One of the great old men of Hong Kong movies... In this movie, DAAI ZEK LOU, which translates as 'The Big Guy', he cooks up a c...
